Double modality computer interface for learners with special needs

Abstract


We propose a cost effective human-machine interface interpreting the userâ??s hand or head gestures. This system targets people suffering from reduced mobility and can be used in Computer and Web-based learning. This design allows using simple head movements to perform basic computer mouse operations, such as moving the mouse cursor on a computer screen. To improve functionality, the system uses voice recognition to execute repetitive movements, such as clicks and double-clicks. We will explain two different infrared sensor layouts and discuss the way our design detects and processes a userâ??s head or hand movements. Furthermore, we will explain the benefits and drawbacks of using voice recognition in our design. The conclusion presents our results as well as future perspectives for our design

Habib Hamam, University of Moncton

Habib Hamam obtained the B.Eng. and M.Sc. degrees in information processing from the Technical University of Munich, Germany 1988 and 1992, and the PhD degree in telecommunications from Université of Rennes I conjointly with France Telecom Graduate School, France 1995. He also obtained a postdoctoral diploma, ?Habilitation of Conducting Research in Signal Processing and Telecommunicationsâ�¬, from Université de Rennes I in 2004. He is currently a full Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Université de Moncton and a Canada Research Chair holder in ?Optics in Information and Communication Technologiesâ�¬. He is among others associate editor of the IEEE Canadian Review, member of the editorial board - Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing, John Wiley & Sons - and TPC member of IEEE ICC.His research interests are in optical telecommunications, diffraction, fiber components, optics of the eye, biomedical engineering and E-Learning.
