Abstract

Discrete event simulation technologies have been extensively used by industry and academia to deal with various industrial problems. By late 1990s, the discrete event simulation was in doldrums as global manufacturing industries went through radical changes. The simulation software industry also went through consolidation. The changes have created new problems, challenges and opportunities to the discrete event simulation. This paper reviews the discrete event simulation technologies; discusses challenges and opportunities presented by both global manufacturing and the knowledge economy. The authors believe that discrete event simulation remains one of the most effective decision support tools but much need to be done in order to address new challenges. To this end, the paper calls for development of a new generation of discrete event simulation software.

Ming Wang, Fairliegh Dickinson University - Vancouver, Canada

Dr. Ming Wang is currently an Adjunct Professor of Business with the Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr Wang holds a B.Sc. (1st Class Hons) in engineering and a Ph.D. in Computing, both from Brunel University in the United Kingdom. He also holds MA in China Studies from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Dr Wang started his career with Dowty Group Plc (UK), first as a Student Apprentice, Production Engineer and Manufacturing Systems Analyst. He was a Senior Research Fellow in Singapore Institute of Standards and Industrial Research (SISIR). He was a co-founder and Managing Director of CIMTEK Pte Ltd, a Singapore-incorporated company providing advanced IT solutions to industries in Singapore, Malaysia and China. Dr Wang was a Lecturer of Operational Research at Keele University (UK), an Adjunct Lecturer at National University of Singapore, and had co-supervised Ph.D. students from Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and other universities. He has authored more than 30 technical publications on international journals and conferences. Dr Wang was born in China. He received a full scholarship to study overseas (the first recipient of such scholarships in China). He was headhunted by the Singapore Government’s Economic Development Board to join the Singapore Institute of Standards and Industrial Research in 1990 under the International Manpower Program. Dr Wang’s research interests are in areas of international management, particularly strategic and operational issues related to global manufacturing and supply chain; and decision support algorithms and systems.
